(& maybe laos..cambodia..vietnam..but these i can get to by train)..Is it a better idea to buy the tickets i'll need to get to india & indonesia before i leave for my travels..? or wait until i'm in thailand to purchase them..I heard plane tickets are really cheap to buy their..just don't know about availability.
...any advise on the subject would help..thanx~*

My personal experience with that is you should buy tix beforehand, the price difference is usually negligible and it takes care of potentially stressfull situations upfront. Sounds like an amazing trip!!!

Thank you Simone. One thing I would really suggest (in Bali) is to get a driver. We totally did not want to do it at first but I am SO glad we did, we saw so much more than we expected. Our driver (Dewa Antera) was a deeply spiritual, kind and beautiful man who gave us in-depth info on everything and kept us out of the major tourist loops. It costs 20-30 dollars a day, but it is so worth it...much to explore around the island and he will drop you off in great places and then come pick you up a few days later, etc. You could rent a vehicle for a little less, but once you see how gnarley driving in Bali is, you won't want to. His email is dwantara@yahoo.com, if you have any more q's don't hesitate to ask!

I bought my ticket to Bali in Thailand, instead of the US, on advice from several sources, including the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree forums. I got a ticket from a travel agent reccommended by a local friend in Chiang Mai, for about $400. I believe this was a substantial savings. It was easy and gave me a bit of extra travel freedom.

I loved my Laos. Cambodia and Vietnam leg of my trip. I spent about 3 weeks in each country, definitely not enough. Amazingly warm and lovely people in Cambodia and Laos, and tons to see in Viet Nam. Laos is so beautiful! Here is a tip: Try to be in Hoi An, Viet Nam on the full moon. There is a monthly full moon festival that is very lovely. The old city's street lamps are turned off and the district is lit by chinese lanterns. Traditional music and art is in abundance. Candles in paper boats drift down the river among the colorful boats. Lovely and dreamy!

~thanks for the tip michael..i'll keep that idea in mind..& see how it flows..seems like a wonderfull man & for that reason in itself am i tempted for the sake of a local connection.. I'd like to take public transport as much as possible as well..boats..buses..trains..for the sake of a real view of things as experienced by the people..still seems like a cool thing though..* but i plan on spending as much of my time as possible in ubud while in indonesia so that i can really learn Batik in an in depth way..but of course i want to see as much as possible while i'm their..to really get a sense of the different textures of the country..
~ooooooohhh the full moon in vietnam..thanx for the tip..sounds magical..
I truly hope i'll have enough time to visit cambodia..vietnam..& laos..beacause i decided i only want to visit places where i'll really have enough time to spend their..& since i'm also going to indonesia..thailand & india.. hmm..if it's in the stars ey//? otherwise on future journies..
      * i plan on volunteering at a few farms while in thai. & india as well..if u have any suggestions ..i heard of a few through wwoof(willing workers on organic farms) but insiders views are always best..>>
*anyone been to Pai..? heard it was nice..
*>ouch..$400 u say? still feels like a lot for a 2 1/2 hour journey..i just spotted one on the internet for a bit over 300$ but with a stopover in a country i'd never heard of..& a stopover for such a short flight seems odd to begin with..so hmm somethin fishy..but yesss so again thanks for the input..blessing~Simone

Simone I would not buy plane tickets in advamce unless it will be the month of August. I have been in Indonesia for 2 months and the tickets are really really cheap within Indonesia and just now people are having to book out a few days in advance rather than just showing up at the airport and buying a ticket on the next flight.

    Example fares:
    Dempasar - Kupang 70 USD
Dempasar - Labuan Bajo 50 USD
    Kupang - Alor 20 USD

Anyway it is cheap. Also for with in Asia check out airasia.com. New airline company and it is as cheap as it gets. But with airasia.com the cheaper seats sell out sooner. Some people paid 16 USD including taxes to fly from Kuching in Malaysian Borneo to Bankok.

thanx* yeah i'm leaning most in that direction now..to purchase while their..i checked out air asia but cant seem to find an option on the website that would allow me to buy a roundtrip from bangkok to bali..or from bangkok to India..they seem to only have certain fixed routes at the moment or something..
but ok hope yer having a great time~*

Bangkok has great deals on tix. Just buy your ticket to Bangkok. Get your international flights there. Buy the domestic flights within Indo and India.

Watch out with Air Asia. They have really low baggage allowance, (15 kg) if you have more stuff your flight will not be cheap . . .

I will never fly with them again. Horrible airline.

horrible in what sense..? (aside from baggage allowance)..my concern would be safety..

I have no reason to think that it is unsafe.

You can't cancel or change your ticket once purchased. The baggage allowance was a BIG problem for me. You can't buy there tickets from an ordinary travel agent. They don't even give you a soda pop on the plane. I dunno - I suppose it will be OK for you, but I don't agree that there prices are that much better for all of the restrictions they subject their passengers to. I don't like that Airline.
