I got married there in January.

Heed the advice and the rules of the locals. Do not enter the temples while menstruating.
Take those signs outside the temples seriously.

My wife's cousin entered Uluwatu while menstruating, and later that night got posessed by Nyai Loro Kidul.

While posessed, she she spoke fluent classical Balinese and knew Balinese Classical Dance movements.
The duration of the posession was 13 minutes.

The family brushed it off, but then it happened again the following evening.
They decided to consult with a hindu priest.
The priest recommended the husband and parents of my wife's cousin to go back to Uluwatu with an offering and an apology.

They did this and so far, no more visits from Nyai Loro Kidul.

fascinating!! Bali has long, long, long LONG time traditions (i.e. big time beliefs). the meanings for "no entry-when menstruating" have no meaningful purpose to us and are perhaps contradictory to our own; however! the energies around the cultural beliefs for them are HUGE. Thousands of years of constant patterns and beliefs. so yes, beware --I personally wouldn't (and didn't) attempt to butt up to a powerful swirling vortex of consistent energies that carry a seemingly solid belief in a foreign place where ....you are like a delicate dragonfly swishing about viewing gracefully, however so innocently...zap :-)
