I'm going to Bali for the first time in early May. I'll be there for a month, and really like to experience the 'strange and unusual', and get off the beaten path. I am also interested in checking out Balinese Art, Agriculture, Botanical Gardens, things like that. I dont like to surf. Suggestions anyone?

Re: Anyone know of some awesome adventures?
Mon, April 9, 2007 - 11:51 AMI suggest quite the contrary, I say make a detailed itinerary with a balanced budget, then go to an all inclusive hotel like "Club Med" and relax there for your entire trip, that way the only interaction with the natives is ordering room service and dropping off towels. Occasionally you will experience culture at the hotel gift shop or perhaps a Balinese dance brought to your hotel for your viewing pleasure. If you are truly feeling adventurous, you can probably walk to the Sheraton next door. As for motorcycles.... they are dangerous, why potentially risk your life when you can go on a hotel sponsored tour in a full AC tour bus where all the destinations and dining have been pre-arranged and deemed safe and sanitary by the hotel experts. Ubud is a hippie wash out community, where bohemian attitudes prevail, you might as well visit a leper colony. -

Mon, April 9, 2007 - 2:44 PMTanah lot is nice, Agung mountain, Lake batam, and the near by volcano, motor bike to Singaraja, thats an adventure, but take it slow on those curves cause its a long way down. Karanasam, get some ripe jack fruit. You'll probably get lost and have an adventure. -

Re: Anyone know of some awesome adventures?
Sat, April 14, 2007 - 8:14 PMIf you don't like the beach, use Ubud as your base, there are a lot of places to stay at different budgets, but inspect your room before agreeing to payment. The Elephant Cave was interesting and visit the Goa Gajah it's almost mystical. Staying in Ubud allows easy access to a lot of things, you can see the dancers perform, the Legong is particarly enjoyable. Befriend a local at your hotel or inn, I was invited to a local Balinese wedding, the next day was invited to a tooth filing ceremony. The cremation ceremonies are incredible to watch as well. Traveling up to the volcano Gunung Agung, there is a temple, Pura Besakih. I don't quite agree with renting a motor bike, or driving. Hop on a bemo (a local mini van) and ride with the locals village to village. If you want to purchase Balinese art, they have a pasar sukawati, where the locals buy and sell to shops etc, I bought a 3 dimensionalcarved wooden story board that is out of this world. Most of the enjoyment of my trip was talking to the locals and visiting the small mountain villages. Bali is such a magical place. I wish you a wonderful and safe journey.. -

Re: Anyone know of some awesome adventures?
Mon, April 16, 2007 - 12:16 PMOn a serious note, Bali can be a lil played out, but it all depends on what you're looking for. If you're into a serious adventure rent a motorbike, but make sure you're the type of person who is comfortable in vehicles and you consider yourself traffic savvy, if you're not, bali traffic will eat you alive. Lombok offers some crazy adventures, if you like the outdoors and are into semi-hardcore hiking, climb mount rinjani, you can do it for like 100 bucks including transportation from bali, porters and guides. It'll burn a good 5 days though and is not for the feeble. Agung is a lot easier and its like a 1 day climb. Hanging out in one of the gili's off of lombok is always an interesting experience. -

Re: Anyone know of some awesome adventures?
Mon, April 16, 2007 - 12:26 PMI agree. I love Bali, but I say if you're looking for a real adventure you should probably leave Bali. Java is great (especially Yogya), Sumatra is amazing, there's great stuff on Lombok, and I've heard wonderful things about many of the other islands, e.g. Sulawesi and Flores. If you want a *real* adventure, go to Kalimantan or Papua. -

Re: Anyone know of some awesome adventures?
Mon, April 16, 2007 - 1:31 PMThank you for all these suggestions! There are so many islands in that area, that its a bit daunting trying to pick just one. Is it pretty easy getting around by ferry or do you need to take those island hopper planes? On another note, I will be travelling alone. I know Bali is pretty chill when it comes to lone female backpackers, but should I know anything about the other islands? Other than basic street smarts and covering up? -

Re: Anyone know of some awesome adventures?
Mon, April 16, 2007 - 2:58 PMBetween Bali and Lombok I'd say take a ferry. It very easy and cheap. When I was last there (about two years ago), there were basically two ways you could get there: 1) the cheap way, where you have to go through the Lombokian shithole Bangsal, and 2) the more expensive way, where you get whisked straight from Padang Bai to either Lombok proper or to the Gili Island of your choice. I highly recommend the Gilis, especially Gili Air. There are three Gilis: Trawangan, Air, and another one whose name escapes me. Gili Trawangan is the more populated party island, Gili X is almost vacant, and Gili Air strikes a nice balance between the two. If you can swing it I suggest trying to bypass Bangsal. It truly sucks, and you will get hassled pretty badly there, and pretty much everyone there is a criminal or huckster of some sort. The merchants there have gotten the nickname 'the Bangsal Mafia', and for good reason. If I remember correctly, the Low Art Gallery on Jalan Raya in Ubud arranges the more expensive trip to Lombok, but I'm not certain about that.
I also very strongly recommend Yogakarta in Java. It's not nearly as easy on the eyes as Bali is, but I found its art and culture to amazing. In Bali, pretty much all the art you'll see is, while astonishingly beautiful, very traditional. In Yogya they definitely have a lot of traditional culture to explore, but they also have a thriving contemporary art scene that blew me away. There are a lot of art schools and students in Yogya, from all around the world, so you get a cool mix of traditional art with more contemporary stuff. Like gamelan music mixed with electronica, very socially relevant visual arts, and all kinds of other stuff. You *can* take a ferry and bus to Java, but I think it's way easier to fly from Denpasar to Yogya.
Have fun.

Re: Anyone know of some awesome adventures?
Mon, April 16, 2007 - 2:59 PMOh, and you should be totally fine traveling as a single female there. I've had many female friends travel all over Lombok and Java by themselves. -
