Hello - I'm going to be in Bali for a week in February and am looking for recommendations of places to stay and sights not to be missed. What would be the best part of the island to stay on? Where can I find affordable but nice accomodations? What are some of your ultimate Bali experiences? I'd love to hear all about it, thanks!

In the previous thread, yu mentioned that yu are looking for "a slightly more spiritual experience...Healing centers/experiences and exposure to new ways/methods"?

The Balispirit website has a lot of recommendations in this regard www.balispirit.com/

Oh lucky you!!! I stayed here for my first few nights www.puribambu.com It's not far from the airport and a short walk down to the beach but it's not in Kuta. I wanted a chill start and I was traveling with an 11 year old. After that we rented a motorbike and stayed wherever we went. Mostly in the little homestays which include breakfast for $6 a night (that was a few years ago). If you end up at Puri Bambu you can talk to Iketut (but mention he is from Bongon Villa in Tabanan since they only have four names in Bali). He may take you to a spring that comes up on the oceans reef when the tide is back, for a new moon cleansing ceremony with his village family and priest like he did for us. :-)

I'll post a few journal entries for you --when are you going?

Also, I'm trying to maximize my time there but without overdoing it. I want beach time - R&R and some spa treatments - but I also want to visit the temples, see the culture, etc. I'm interested in spending time in the south, in Ubud, and am also eyeing Amed and Lovina. What course would you guys recommend for someone with more limited time? And where would be a good home base, especially after arriving from San Francisco, that isn't too much of a party environment?

Ubud is the spiritual and artistic center of Bali. Ubud translates as 'medicine mountain '. Check out the Sacred monkey forest when your there, you cant miss it. And if you get tired of Ubud and want to see a nice beach, go to Amed. In Amed there's no atm machines so bring some crisp 1 hundred dollar bills. the water and scuba diving in Amed is first class, There a sorta hippy place with bamboo bungalows right on the water for like 15$ I think it's called 'Uncle Bobba's' or something similar to that. The south is cheesy resorts and tons of Aussie's, gets boring fast, but it's close to the airport so you might stay a day in Legion when you first arrive. Also just north of Ubud (like a 15 minute walk) there's some nice little villages, rice patties and beautiful people.
